What is cystic acne?

Cystic acne, often regarded as the most severe form of acne, can be a painful and frustrating skin condition that affects many individuals. These deep, inflamed blemishes form when hair follicles become clogged with excess oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. What sets cystic acne apart from other types of acne is the development of large, painful cysts beneath the skin’s surface. These cysts can be stubborn, taking weeks or even months to heal, and may leave behind scars. Coping with cystic acne can be challenging, both physically and emotionally. However, there are effective treatments available, and with the right approach, you can manage and overcome this troublesome condition.

What causes cystic acne?

Cystic acne, often considered one of the most severe forms of acne, can be an unwelcome and frustrating skin condition. Understanding its causes is the first step towards effectively managing and preventing this condition. At its core, cystic acne develops when hair follicles become clogged with a combination of excess oil (sebum), dead skin cells, and bacteria. These blockages create the ideal environment for the proliferation of Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) bacteria, leading to inflammation and the formation of painful cysts beneath the skin’s surface.

Hormones also play a pivotal role in the development of cystic acne. Hormonal fluctuations, often associated with puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, or conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), can trigger an increase in sebum production. This excess oil exacerbates the clogging of follicles, leading to more severe outbreaks.

Additionally, genetics may contribute to one’s susceptibility to cystic acne. If your parents or close relatives experienced this condition, you may be more likely to as well. Lifestyle factors such as diet and stress can also influence its development. While some believe certain foods may exacerbate acne, more research is needed in this area. Stress, on the other hand, can lead to hormonal imbalances, which in turn can worsen acne symptoms.

How can I prevent cystic acne?

Avoiding cystic acne, a severe and often painful form of acne, involves adopting a comprehensive approach to skincare, lifestyle, and self-care. Here are some strategies to help prevent cystic acne:

  1. Cleanse Gently: Use a mild, non-comedogenic cleanser to clean your face twice a day. Avoid harsh scrubs that can irritate your skin.
  2. Moisturize: Keep your skin hydrated with a non-comedogenic moisturizer. Well-moisturized skin is less prone to excessive oil production.
  3. Balanced Diet: While the link between diet and acne isn’t completely clear, some individuals find that avoiding dairy, sugary foods, and high-glycemic index foods can help. Incorporate fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into your diet.
  4. Hydration: Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated and flush out toxins.
  5. Avoid Touching Your Face: Refrain from touching your face, as it can transfer bacteria and dirt to your skin.
  6. Hands Off Pimples: Do not pick, pop, or squeeze acne lesions. This can worsen inflammation and increase the risk of scarring.
  7. Stress Management: High-stress levels can exacerbate acne. Practice stress-reduction techniques like yoga, meditation, or deep breathing exercises.
  8. Regular Exercise: Physical activity can help regulate hormones and improve blood circulation. Shower after exercise to remove sweat and bacteria from your skin.
  9. Sun Protection: Protect your skin from excessive sun exposure with sunscreen or protective clothing. Some acne medications can make your skin more sensitive to the sun.
  10. Quality Skincare Products: Use non-comedogenic skincare and makeup products to avoid clogging your pores.
  11. Regular Cleansing of Makeup Brushes: Dirty makeup brushes can harbor bacteria. Regularly clean your brushes and tools.
  12. Prescription Medications: If you have frequent or severe cystic acne, consider consulting a dermatologist. They can prescribe oral antibiotics, birth control pills, or isotretinoin, a powerful medication for severe acne.

Remember, results may not be immediate, and patience is key. It’s essential to stick to your skincare routine and lifestyle changes consistently. If your cystic acne persists, consulting a dermatologist is advisable, as they can provide tailored solutions and medications to address the issue effectively.

In all honesty, I’m terrified to actually post these pictures. BUT, I need you to see the ACTUAL results I had in 48 hours.

My 48hr Cystic Pimple Journey:

After years of trying soooooo many different things, I woke up one morning with a small, but painful cystic pimple. I did what I never suggest anyone do: I squeezed at it. BIG MISTAKE! Not only did that NOT help at all, but it also made my eye swell terribly. I immediately tried all the tips I had unsuccessfully tried over the years. I applied ice, I applied heat, I used salycic acid, nothing worked. Nothing took the swelling down either.
I was desperate, so I went on Reddit. I perused roughly 14 posts, with 1 good eye may I add, until I stumbled on one that I had a good feeling about. I placed an order, for overnight delivery, of course, and I went to bed that night feeling pretty defeated, but hopeful.
The next morning I opened my front door and looked down at my box of hopes and dreams for a split second before I tore into it. I followed the instructions, applying each solution 2 times a day (for a total of 4), and going to bed with the drying patch on my cystic pimple, and when I woke up the first morning, I noticed a HUGE difference already. The pimple had come to the surface. I repeated the above steps that day.
I cried when I woke up on the second morning and noticed my cystic pimple was pretty much gone. Check out my 48 hour progress:

Picture 1: Taken just before I applied solution
Picture 2: Taken before bed on Night 1.

What normally happens in 3-4 weeks, was achieved in 48 hours! The swelling went down, too!
